Newspaper coverage of Solid Waste Workshop at Munger Nagar Nigam

The online workshop with Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation was successfully conducted on 19 May 2026. The session was chaired by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Malkajgiri and was attended by officials from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Norwegian Embassy. In addition, representatives from all 14 ward circles of Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation participated, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the municipal jurisdiction. The workshop featured focused presentations by UNEP on three critical themes:

  • Understanding new provisions in the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2026 – highlighting regulatory updates and implications for municipal operations.
  • Enforcing Single-Use Plastics (SUP) bans and promoting alternatives – emphasizing strategies for effective enforcement and showcasing viable substitutes to reduce plastic dependency.
  • Operationalizing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) with Municipal Corporations – outlining mechanisms for integrating EPR frameworks into municipal waste management systems to strengthen accountability and resource recovery.

The interactive discussions provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by Malkajgiri in implementing these measures. The active participation of ward-level officials underscored the commitment of the Corporation to align with national and international best practices.

Feedback from Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation has been formally documented which serves as an important input for refining future capacity-building initiatives and strengthening collaboration between UNEP, municipal authorities, and international partners.
