The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the Munger Municipal Corporation, organised an awareness workshop on plastic waste management in June 2026. The session was presided over by the Hon’ble Mayor of Munger and brought together approximately 45 participants representing various officials of the Corporation.
The workshop served as a platform to highlight the urgent need for improved plastic waste management practices in the city. Discussions centred on practical strategies to motivate waste generators to adopt source segregation, recognising it as the cornerstone of effective waste management. Participants were introduced to simple behavioural nudges, community‑level initiatives, and mechanisms that can encourage households and bulk waste generators to separate plastics at the point of generation.
In addition, the workshop provided a detailed overview of the latest Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, with emphasis on the responsibilities of urban local bodies, bulk waste generators, and citizens. Key provisions such as mandatory segregation at source, extended producer responsibility (EPR) linkages, and enforcement of single‑use plastic bans were explained in an accessible manner.
The interactive format allowed participants to share local challenges and explore solutions tailored to Munger’s context. By combining regulatory awareness with practical guidance, the workshop aimed to build ownership among stakeholders and strengthen the city’s pathway towards sustainable plastic waste management.
