On July 1, 2022, India banned the manufacture, distribution, sale and use of 19 identified single use plastic items. These items are still widely manufactured, circulated and used in the Indian market. The ban on single-use plastics has failed in the country, and the authorities seem to be doing little to enforce it. This report dives deep into the antecedents of the ban on single-use plastics in India. It examines why banned items are still available in various parts of the country and what can be done to make India free of single-use plastic.
