India - Norway Marine Pollution Initiative

Single Use Plastics

Plastic pollution has emerged as a serious environment issue globally. It has been estimated that at least 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans annually, out of which 80% are from land-based sources. Plastic consumption especially use of single-use plastic products are increasing rapidly with the urbanization and lifestyle conveniences. The Government of India notified Plastic Waste Management Rules in 2016 and various State Governments and UT administrations have also issued various regulation and guidelines to deal with plastic waste management. Under the India-Norway Marine Pollution Initiative, UNEP has undertaken a study on the regulatory measures and policies introduced by the various States/UTs on single-use plastics. The study encompasses a country wide analysis of the status of regulation, implementation and compliance on single-use plastics including an in-depth review of the best practices adopted and challenges faced in the enforcement of SUP ban in five states, namely Maharashtra, Kerala, Odisha, Sikkim and Delhi.
